Iran will attack Israel again if necessary, the Supreme Leader said in a rare speech..
The foreign minister of Iran says he backs attempts to reach a regional peace with Israel, but he also threatens Tel Aviv with severe reprisals should it strike Iran.
When Abbas Araghchi made his comments on Friday, he was in Beirut attending discussions with representatives of Lebanon. Three days had passed since the most recent of a string of swiftly intensifying attacks that have the potential to bring the area closer to full-scale conflict.
“If the Israeli entity takes any step or measure against us, our retaliation will be stronger than the previous one,” Araghchi said after meeting Lebanon’s Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri.
On Tuesday, Iran launched missiles at Israel. Iran said the attack was in retaliation for Israel’s killings of senior Hezbollah, Hamas and Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) figures, including Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah, and escalating attacks in Lebanon.
Araghchi said his presence in the city under bombardment signals Iran’s support for Hezbollah and expressed backing for a ceasefire in Lebanon, contingent on a simultaneous Israeli ceasefire in Gaza.
He stated, "We support the efforts for a ceasefire, provided that it comes simultaneously with a ceasefire in Gaza and that first, the rights of the Lebanese people are respected and it is accepted by the [Hezbollah] resistance."
Iran's attacks on Israel, according to Araghchi, are "legitimate self-defence based on the UN Charter."
“Unlike Israel, which targets residential areas, we only attacked military centres,” he stated. "Unless the Zionist regime chooses to continue its attacks, we do not intend to continue the attacks."
Israeli assaults on Lebanon, especially in the capital’s highly populated southern suburbs, continued on Friday. Residents described the explosions that day's Israeli forces' bombardment of the area as the bloodiest attack on Beirut to far.
Late on Thursday, there were apparently at least 11 consecutive raids that shot smoke plumes into the skyline and shook the earth.
